All about Miniature Pinschers

miniature-pinscher.jpg

The Miniature PInscher is a great family breed. As they offer something for everyone..  A proud, vigorous, hardy, spirited little dog, the Miniature Pinscher is frequently called "King of the Toys". Originating in Germany where it was known as the Reh Pinscher because of its resemblance to small red deer. It is important to note that the Miniature Pinscher is not a miniaturised Dobermann.

The "Min Pin's" loving nature, loyalty and intelligence make it a favourite with both adults and gentle children. Bold and flashy with a tendency to show off, the "Min Pin's" distinctive hackney gait gives it a style few breeds can rival.

Bright, attentive and trainable the Miniature Pinscher often out performs far larger breeds in the obedience ring.

The Miniature Pinscher's sleek black, blue, chocolate, fawn, red or stag red coat sheds minimally and requires little grooming. "Min Pins" are ideal for flat dwellers and may obtain sufficient exercise in a very small space. They have a low tolerance to cold therefor it is necessary to provide warm housing for this breed.

Docked Tails

One of the breed's standards is their tails must be docked in order to be qualified for AKC shows and events. The dewclaws must also be removed. This 2-in-1 procedure is done by a vet and must be done between the ages of 3-5 days  and it is quite inexpensive. If this time is missed, you will have to wait til they are 14-16 weeks old before the vet will perform the procedure, at which time it would cost much more.

Non-Cropped Ears
8-21-2-s.jpg

Some breeders decide not to have their min pin's ears cropped. Some have reported that cropping the ears cause pain for the dog their entire lives. But this maybe due to some breeders cropping the ears themselves and at a very young age. A Vet will not crop their ears before they are 16 weeks old.   And a Vet will not crop their ears after a year old. The ears wont stand right. If you are considering buying a min pin and the ears are already cropped, make sure and find who cropped them and at what age were they cropped. You don't want to spend a lot of money for a Pure bred dog to later find out that he/she is going to have problems and may require expensive Vet visits.
